Canal Street murder suspect who ran off on deputies captured in Miami Beach

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (WVUE) - Miami Beach Police have apprehended a man wanted for a deadly shooting in New Orleans on Canal Street.

Kendrick McGee, 38, had been on the run since the day before Thanksgiving.

The shooting happened on Nov. 27, 2023, in the 800 block of Canal Street, according to the New Orleans Police Department. The victim, identified as 28-year-old Timothy Sams, was taken to a hospital by EMS where he later died.

Reserve deputies from the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office were on duty nearby and responded to the gunfire. They managed to handcuff McGee at the scene, but another suspect fled. Amid the chaos, McGee escaped while still handcuffed.

An arrest warrant was issued for McGee over a week later on Dec. 1.

McGee was arrested on Feb. 15. Extradition is pending.
