Catching up with Idaho's senators

U.S. Sen. Jim Risch was talking about supporting small business at a Boise event sponsored by Facebook Thursday so we just had to ask the senator about social media.

Specifically, President Trump's prodigious use of Twitter.

"I'm asked every day as I go to the Senate about his morning Twitter," the Idaho Republican said. "I don't usually engage in that."

Another Idaho Republican, U.S. Sen. Mike Crapo, opened up a little more about Trump's tweets.

"There are times when he tweets something out that takes the focus off what we're doing," Crapo said. "But I keep coming back to the fact the president is putting out a strong agenda for us."

And we asked about the president's strategy on Afghanistan.

"I have been reluctant to support increased activity in Afghanistan," said Crapo. "But when the president said he was going to let the men and women in our military have the rules of engagement to achieve their mission and remove the threat that faces us, I was pleased to hear that."

"He has weighed the ins and outs of staying or leaving and concluded leaving isn't in our best interests right now," said Risch, who serves on the Senate Intelligence Committee. "He's right about that. But we didn't get much detail. I suspect I'll get more detail when I get back in a classified setting."

Risch expects Congress to take another crack at health care after the Labor Day break but the senator says the solution must be a bi-partisan approach.
